Everything About Salary Slips in India
What is a Salary Slip?
A salary slip (also called payslip or pay stub) is a document issued by an employer to an employee each month. It details the employee's earnings, deductions, and net pay for that pay period. In India, salary slips are mandatory under the Payment of Wages Act and the Code on Wages 2019.
Components of a Salary Slip
A standard Indian salary slip includes these components:
Earnings
- Basic Salary: 40-50% of CTC, forms the base for PF, HRA, and gratuity calculations
- House Rent Allowance (HRA): 40-50% of basic, partially exempt from tax under Old Regime
- Special Allowance: Remaining amount after allocating basic, HRA, and other components
- Conveyance Allowance: For commuting expenses, usually ₹1,600/month
- Medical Allowance: For medical expenses, usually ₹1,250/month
Deductions
- Employee PF: 12% of basic salary (capped at ₹15,000 basic)
- ESI: 0.75% of gross salary (for gross ≤ ₹21,000/month)
- Professional Tax: State-specific, max ₹2,500/year
- TDS (Income Tax): Based on declared investments and chosen tax regime

Why Salary Slips Matter
Beyond legal compliance, salary slips serve as proof of income for loan applications, rental agreements, visa processing, and income tax filing. Banks require the last 3-6 months of salary slips for home loan and personal loan approvals. A well-formatted salary slip from PaySlipMaker is accepted by all major banks and financial institutions.
